Vietnam aims to aid ornamental growing with technology

On December 28, 2025, within the framework of the 2nd Sa Dec Flower Festival 2025, the Techmart workshop themed “Applying technology to enhance the value chain of ornamental flower products” took place in Sa Dec City, Dong Thap province. The event opened up many new cooperation prospects for members of the Netherlands-Vietnam Horti Business Platform (NVHBP) in providing advanced technological solutions for the flower capital of the Mekong Delta.

Opening the workshop, a representative from the Department of Science and Technology of Dong Thap province emphasized that ornamental flowers are identified as one of the five key sectors in the province’s agricultural restructuring. The province currently has over 3,600 hectares of ornamental flowers with more than 2,000 varieties, with a total production value estimated at over 4,500 billion VND. The workshop highlighted the importance of applying science and technology to address climate change challenges and improve the quality of export-oriented products.

Discussions at the workshop focused on several key directions, including developments in breeding through the application of tissue culture and biotechnology to create disease-free flower varieties adapted to local weather conditions. Attention was also given to smart production models, such as greenhouse systems, automated irrigation, and environmental sensors, to optimize cultivation processes. Another major focus was enhancing the value chain by applying post-harvest preservation technologies and standardizing packaging processes in line with international standards.

The workshop featured many in-depth presentations from institutes, universities, associations, and businesses. Notably, the presentation on “Solutions for the development of ornamental flowers between the Netherlands-Vietnam Horti Business Platform (NVHBP) and Dong Thap Province” opened new directions for agricultural business cooperation along the value chain. The Southern Fruit Research Institute shared results from its research and breeding of four varieties of fiery red roses and four varieties of Tiger chrysanthemums suited to the ecological conditions and development orientation of Sa Dec Flower Village.

Scientists from the University of Natural Sciences presented research findings and practical applications of biotechnology in ornamental flower production, contributing to improved seed quality and greater product uniformity. The Da Lat Flower Association outlined its orientation for cooperation and linkage in developing the flower industry with Dong Thap Province, while the Fruit and Vegetable Research Institute focused on applying high technology to increase value across the ornamental flower industry chain.

Particularly noteworthy was the presentation on “Smart Farming using AIoT and Large-Scale Monitoring with Remote Sensing Technology,” which offered a fresh perspective on digital transformation in agriculture. This approach helps flower growers manage production more effectively and adapt to climate change. In addition, opinions from businesses, cooperatives, and ornamental plant associations analyzed existing advantages and limitations, and proposed solutions for connecting consumption, developing new flower and ornamental plant varieties linked to tourism, especially bonsai.

With world-leading strengths in horticultural technology and supply chains, Dutch businesses are considered important strategic partners in supporting Dong Thap Province’s goal of making the flower and ornamental plant industry a key economic sector.
