Wageningen University & Research (WUR), together with strategic industry partners, has launched a new online tool: ShelfLifeCalculator.nl. The platform enables companies in the fresh produce sector to predict and evaluate the remaining shelf life of products based on actual storage conditions.
With increasing pressure on the supply chain to reduce waste and improve efficiency, the tool offers a science-based way to link storage conditions directly to product quality.

From data to decisions
Users can either manually enter storage conditions such as temperature, humidity, and O₂/CO₂ levels, or upload data from loggers. The system then calculates the remaining shelf life in days, supported by visual graphs and a clear alarm system.
“The idea is simple,” the developers explain. “Enter your conditions or upload your data and instantly see how much shelf life is left, and where the risks are.”
The platform includes both a Predict mode for simulations and an Evaluate mode for analysing real shipments.
Clear insights into quality risks
In addition to shelf life, the tool highlights key risks including chilling injury, damage caused by high CO₂ or low oxygen levels, and accelerated ageing resulting from temperature exposure.
Results are presented in a traffic light system, allowing users to quickly assess whether a product is still within acceptable quality limits.
Although the website currently displays around 30 products, the underlying model combines scientific research with a database of more than 250 products, including fruit, vegetables, and cut flowers.
For the entire supply chain
The Shelf Life Calculator is aimed at a broad group of users, including growers, exporters, traders, cold storage operators, transport companies, and retailers.
Beyond the web interface, the platform also offers an API for integration into existing systems, supporting further digitalisation of the fresh produce supply chain.
Version 1.17 now live
The first version of the tool has been tested by several users and is now available online. The development team is actively inviting feedback and is working on further improvements, including expanded product coverage and enhanced prediction accuracy.
With this launch, WUR and its partners aim to support the sector in moving towards data-driven, predictive quality management, helping companies reduce losses and maximise product value.
