Since mid-2026, a separate production unit for young plants at Elsner pac in Thiendorf has also been certified organic. Production of ‘organically certified’ herbs began two years ago at the company’s own facility in Portugal. However, these could only be offered and sold as cuttings. By expanding its range to include ‘young plants’, the company is now taking things a step further and can also offer organic young plants from other product groups. Organic poinsettias for rooting are currently being tested.
Managing Director Christoph Hoffmann says: “We are well aware that demand for organic ornamental young plants is still relatively modest at present. But it is growing. And given the pressure on our sector to address sustainability transparently, we took this decision at an early stage.”

According to the company’s management, there is significant demand for certain specialist pelargoniums, such as scented geraniums, as well as for ground cover plants, meaning that a larger proportion of mother plant production is also being converted to ‘organic’. The transition in production was supported by EcoCert, one of the world’s largest organic certification organisations, which has been supporting stakeholders in implementing and promoting sustainable practices through certification and training for almost 30 years.
