A compact Agapanthus bred in California has been entered into the Plantarium Novelties Awards 2026 with a single Dutch winter behind it and stock still being bulked up for European growers.
AtomicSparkx Lavender (ALTatomicage) comes out of the Altman Plants breeding program in the United States and was entered by Walter Blom Plants and Plants for Europe. It reaches 30 to 50 cm in flower, and it is described as the first compact Agapanthus to carry the series’ traits.

The variety was trialed for several years in the United States before moving to a trial in the Netherlands. AtomicSparkx Lavender is the first compact Agapanthus to carry the signature traits of its larger sibling, Agapanthus AtomicBloom – delivering big flowers on shorter stems, strong weather resistance, and a neat, manageable growth habit. Like the rest of the Agapanthus ‘Atomic’ series, Lavender offers a rare combination of winter hardiness, repeat flowering, robust vigour, and excellent performance in both open ground and containers.
Propagation is by tissue culture, produced through Walter Blom Plants. Stock has been bulking, and material may reach growers this year, with wider availability expected in 2027.
Additional colors in the compact line are in trial in the United States, with releases expected from next year onward.
AtomicSparkx Lavender will be shown at Plantarium|Groen-Direkt on 26 and 27 August in Hazerswoude-Dorp.
