With small margins and large volumes, the fruit and vegetable sector is pre-eminently a market for credit insurance

Dutch Credit Brokers, a credit insurance specialist, has moved to a new building in Aalsmeer, the Netherlands. Owners Ralph Reinders and Jeroen Wesseling celebrated the milestone with customers, insurers and suppliers.

“We were always located in the middle of a shopping street, which didn’t make sense for our type of business. Now we’ve moved to a building on an industrial estate,” says Jeroen. He looks back on a successful opening.

“Our neighbors gave us permission to use their section of the rooftop terrace as well. The beautiful weather was a real bonus. We started with a select group of business clients, and it gradually turned into a private party with family, partners and friends. It was a wonderful day.”

Asked about the main developments in the credit insurance market, Jeroen doesn’t offer the most reassuring answer. “I truly believe we are heading toward a crisis, considering the geopolitical situation, diesel prices, freight costs and the energy market.”

“So far, it always seems that the bubble is just about to burst, but we expect it will happen at some point and lead to an economic downturn in the first quarter of 2027. You can already see insurers tightening credit limits. Premiums are even rising in some places, which is fairly unusual, as the last time that happened was during the financial crisis of 2008/09,” Jeroen says.

Ralph and Jeroen founded Dutch Credit Brokers almost 20 years ago as credit insurance specialists. The team consists of six people. The fresh produce sector is the company’s most important market.

“Wherever margins are small and volumes are large, there is strong demand for credit insurance, and the fresh produce sector is a prime example. We are fully prepared for the next 20 years,” Ralph concludes.
