Hamiplant, a Dutch ornamental plant supplier, hosted a supplier day for more than 220 growers, transporters and colleagues in the Netherlands on October 2 to mark its 40th anniversary. The aim was not only to look back, but also to work together on the future of the ornamental horticulture chain from the consumer’s perspective.
How can retailers make sure they have exactly the right plants on the shelf when a weekend turns out sunnier than expected? And how can the chain respond faster, capture sales opportunities and reduce waste? These are questions that no single party can solve alone.

From retail developments to concrete solutions
The afternoon focused on the future of retail and changing consumer needs. After an update on Hamiplant’s strategy and a keynote on the Future of Retail, participants began working on challenges themselves.
At the heart of the discussions were concrete issues raised by Hamiplant’s customers in various European markets. How can we make smarter use of data and weather forecasts to better align supply and demand? How can we make plants more attractive and accessible to consumers? And how can we improve the shelf life of plants and make packaging more sustainable without compromising affordability?
Split into groups, growers, transporters and Hamiplant colleagues combined their knowledge and practical experience. Working from different links in the chain, they developed ideas and potential solutions intended to add value on the shop floor.

Putting promising ideas into practice
For Hamiplant, the supplier day does not end with the exchange of ideas. The results of the working groups will be collected and developed further, and all participants will receive feedback on the insights and proposed solutions. Hamiplant will then explore how the most promising ideas can be taken forward with its customers and the partners involved.
“A strong plant shelf doesn’t begin in the store,” says Liesbeth Schaafsma, general manager of Hamiplant. “It requires an understanding of consumer needs and cooperation between all links in the chain. This event showed how promising ideas emerge when we bring parties together and draw on their knowledge and expertise. The next step is to actually act on them, because collaboration only creates real value when we turn ideas into concrete improvements for our customers.”
