Rose exports from Maval, Pune surge, boosting growers’ income

The Maval region in Pune district has witnessed a significant increase in rose production, with exports reaching 50 to 55 lakh roses this year. Growers are benefiting from the rise in prices.

The Pawana Phool Utpadak Sangh (Pawana Flower Producers’ Association) cultivates roses on 450 to 500 hectares of land. The high quality of the roses has led to strong demand. Prices have increased from ₹16–18 per stem last year to ₹20 per stem this year. In local flower markets, prices range from ₹25–30 per stem, leaving farmers satisfied.

Roses are being exported to countries such as the USA, the Netherlands, Japan, Britain, the UAE (Dubai), Singapore, Australia, and New Zealand. Major Indian cities including Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Bengaluru, and Chandigarh are also receiving substantial supplies.

According to Mukund Thakar, President of the Pawana Flower Producers’ Association, the industry employs around 5,000 people, with a significant contribution from women. Varieties such as Taj Mahal, Top Secret, Bordo (red), Gold Strike (yellow), Avalanche (white), and Sophia Loren (pink) are in high demand.

Post-harvest, roses are sorted by size and pre-cooled at 3–4°C. Bunches of 20 stems are wrapped in corrugated sheets and sent to airports for export, along with a mandatory certificate from the Central Government.

India and Japan: A promising future for the floral industry
A delegation from the Flowers and Plants Association of Japan held a preliminary meeting with the Indian Florist Association in Delhi last weekend. The meeting was organized by the Ministry of Agriculture, Government of India.
