9,542m² expansion integrates smoothly into existing facility

Ebtech Glasshouse Systems has successfully delivered a new high-specification Venlo glasshouse and horizontal pull wire screen system for Aldby Field Nurseries Ltd in North Yorkshire, representing a significant investment in modern protected-crop infrastructure in the region.

The newly constructed glasshouse spans 9,542 m² and has been designed as a seamless extension to the nursery’s existing facility. Maintaining a consistent post height of 4.5 metres, the structure integrates smoothly with ongoing production operations without disruption. The glasshouse is split into two equal growing compartments.

High-performance Venlo design
The structure features a 10-bay wide Venlo configuration, measuring 96 metres in width and 99.4 metres in length. Built in full compliance with BS EN 13031:2020 European standards, the structure delivers both durability and optimal growing conditions.

Based on a 3.2m Venlo system with 9.6m spans, the design incorporates an under-gutter trellis section, allowing space for transplanting machinery and improving workflow efficiency.

Key construction elements include a cast perimeter and partition concrete walls, an internal Zeus dollies for structural support, an aluminium BOAL roof system with triple-pane ventilation windows, clear toughened glass throughout for maximum light transmission and an advanced climate screen system.

As part of the project, Ebtech installed a full 9,542 m² horizontal pull cable screen system across two independent zones. The system uses Svensson Harmony 4647 FR climate screens, delivering 46% direct shading, 53% diffused shading, and up to 47% energy savings. “This combination enhances crop quality while significantly improving energy efficiency.”

The screen system is powered by Ridder RW1600 motors and includes galvanised motor drive shafts and reversing wheels, slip clutch mechanisms ensuring a consistent and secure seal against the trellis, and practical integration and access.

The greenhouse is fitted with six aluminium sliding doors and connects directly to the existing nursery structure, ensuring uninterrupted operational flow and ease of access across production areas.
