Bio Energetic Water for a more sustainable horticulture sector

Agro-Watereffects is working on applications of so-called Bio Energetic Water (BEW) to make the agriculture and horticulture sectors more sustainable. The company now has two systems in operation, including one in a closed ebb-and-flow system and another at a freesia grower, where the water is used for irrigation and for dipping freesia bulbs.

According to Agro-Watereffects, the technology contributes to improving water quality and soil life. The system is combined with a biological, Skal-certified product aimed at supporting microflora and reducing unwanted contamination in the soil. Trials are said to show positive results in terms of crop growth and soil structure.

Tests have also been carried out in the ornamental horticulture sector. In trials with cut flowers, including at Royal FloraHolland in Honselersdijk, a longer vase life was reported for flowers placed in BEW-treated water compared to traditional treatments. In a practical test, roses remained in good condition for up to three weeks.

The technology originates from Japan, where research was conducted in the 1960s into the role of water structures in plants. BEW focuses on optimizing the microstructure of water, with the aim of improving the uptake of water and nutrients by plants.

The system can be applied in both greenhouse and open-field cultivation and can be integrated into existing irrigation systems. The water is used in combination with a natural conditioner, which is applied periodically throughout the growing cycle.

Agro-Watereffects states that water quality is becoming an increasingly important issue within the sector, particularly in light of climate change and growing pressure on water resources. At the same time, the company notes that, in its view, insufficient attention is still being paid to alternative water treatment methods.

The company sees BEW as a potential contribution to a more resilient and sustainable cultivation system, with benefits for soil, crops, and product shelf life.
