Dutch potting soil producer acquires major Latvian peat specialist

The Van Egmond Groep, a potting soil producer based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, has acquired all shares of SIA Unguri, a Latvian producer of peat and peat products. The acquisition strengthens the company’s position as a supplier of high-quality substrates and raw materials to the international horticulture sector.

Ronnie Zomer, who has owned Unguri for many years, will remain active as CEO and continue to be involved in the company’s development and growth. The Zomer family acquired Unguri in 1996.

Unguri is one of Latvia’s larger companies specialising in the extraction and processing of peat and peat products. The company manages approximately 550 hectares of peatland and uses modern harvesting and processing equipment. Unguri serves customers worldwide and employs close to 60 staff, including both permanent employees and seasonal workers.

Van Egmond Groep views the acquisition as an important step in its international growth strategy. By expanding production capacity and securing access to high-quality raw materials, the company aims to better serve its global customer base.

Van Egmond Groep is a family business founded in the 1920s. It operates a modern production facility with its own terminal, strategically located in the port of Amsterdam. The company imports and processes bulk raw materials such as sphagnum peat moss, sourced from suppliers including Unguri as well as from its own peatlands in Estonia.
