In memoriam: Bill van Houten

It is with the deepest regret that Abbott-IPCO has announced the passing of William (Bill) van Houten. Bill was the Co-founder of Abbott-IPCO and Classic Caladiums. Bill passed peacefully on May 24, 2026 while visiting his homeland, Holland.

“The world paused at the passing of a great man; one whose influence reached far beyond the boundaries of his own life. He lived with purpose, led with conviction, and carried a quiet strength that inspired those who walked beside him. His legacy is not measured in monuments or titles, but in the countless lives he lifted, the principles he defended, and the compassion he offered without hesitation,” said Abbot-IPCO in a statement.

“He leaves behind a legacy of integrity, courage, and service — a reminder that greatness is not loud, but steady; not self-seeking, but self-giving. Though he is gone, the imprint of his character endures in the people he shaped and the world he helped build. His life was a gift, and his memory remains a guiding light.”

“Bill served as Vice President of Abbott-IPCO for 42 years, from 1974 to 2016. He built long lasting and treasured relationships, always leading with a genuine and caring spirit. He conducted both his business and personal life with integrity. Bill never knew a stranger and approached his business responsibilities with creativity, vision, and a keen ability to provide customized solutions for customers. Concern for other people’s interests was always at the top of his list.”

Bill was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He is survived by his wife Martina (Tiny) and two adult children, his son Jeff and his daughter Denise. Following his retirement from Abbott-IPCO, Bill continued as a voice in the horticulture industry, promoting tulips in Texas and caladiums throughout the globe.

“Bill’s impact on the industry and the thousands of professionals in the horticultural world will be deeply missed and always remembered,” concluded the statement.
