Moana Nursery sees blooms after expansion into Douglas County

The owners of Moana Nursery see their southward expansion into Douglas County as more than an opportunity to offset the seasonal surge in spring sales by growing cut flowers, hanging flower baskets, annuals, herbs and veggie starts. The 20-acre Minden farm, which includes 25,000 square feet of greenhouse space that is targeted for an additional 30,000 square feet of indoor growing operations later this year, could eventually become a destination hub for agritourism akin to the Portland Rose Festival in Oregon.

“One of the reasons we purchase that property is the zoning allows for a full garden center, so as we continue to grow, we’ll continue to invest primarily in the growing activities,” said Scott Gescheider, president and chief executive officer of Moana Nursery.

“We want to put a fourth garden center down there, a year-round garden center that really will be a horticulture campus with a ton of different activities around growing. It will be exciting and fun.”

Moana Nursery purchased the land from Bently Enterprises in 2021 as a way to hedge against the seasonal dropoff in sales once the spring planting season ends. The Moana Farm came online in 2024 and has six greenhouses that house a range of seasonal favorites, including pansies, petunias, vinca, tomato starts, peppers, and a range of other vegetables.
