Mother’s Day drives up to 30% of annual flower sales in Mexico

Mother’s Day, on May 10, accounts for between 20 and 30% of annual revenue in Mexico’s floriculture sector. This concentration of sales requires production planning that begins months in advance to ensure flowers reach their cutting and marketing stage at the right time.

During a conference on the floriculture sector’s value chain, it was noted that the industry encompasses production, management in technified greenhouses, sales through florists, events, and exports. According to the presentation, floriculture in Mexico generates more than 200,000 direct jobs and up to one million indirect jobs, involving growers, technicians, transporters, florists, and designers.

Mexico has more than 10,000 flower growers, most of them small and medium-sized operations, concentrated primarily in the central part of the country. In terms of growing area and specialization, the Valley of Mexico accounts for a share of production in the State of Mexico, in localities such as Villa Guerrero, where cut flowers are grown. In Xochimilco, in the capital, the focus is on ornamental plants.

Fernando Baeza noted that Mother’s Day is the most commercially significant date for the sector, ahead of other consumption windows such as February 14, November 2, and December 12. “It is a way of expressing feelings toward loved ones, but it is also a fundamental season for the entire production chain.”

According to industry estimates, flower sales during this period could generate close to 200 billion pesos nationwide. It was also noted that the presence of informal or occasional vendors during these dates makes it difficult to obtain an exact market figure.

In terms of market behavior, the spike in demand on May 10 can push prices up by as much as 300%. The final price is also influenced by variables such as stem height and thickness, species, color trends, and arrangement type. Among the highest-priced species mentioned were peonies and certain imported lily varieties that are not grown in Mexico and depend on limited availability and seasonal demand.
