Photo report: FlowerTrials 2026

FlowerTrials 2026 has come to an end, and we can look back on a positive, well-attended, and inspiring event. Across the Netherlands and Germany, dozens of breeders opened their doors to showcase the latest genetics, concepts, and innovations. And with more than 400 photos, we once again have plenty of material to revisit the highlights of this year’s event.

As every year, participants pulled out all the stops to give visitors not only an introduction to new varieties but also a memorable experience. From a giant teapot and a venue transformed into a fully themed airport to Italian-inspired settings, a racetrack, and many other creative displays, new varieties were presented in original and engaging ways throughout the event.

Visitors who looked closely could also identify several clear trends. While new colors and striking plant forms naturally attracted attention, the characteristics behind the plants received even greater focus. Terms such as compact, robust, disease-resistant, uniform, early flowering, and long flowering appeared repeatedly in many of the new introductions. These traits are not only valuable for growers but also offer significant benefits for retailers and consumers. The emphasis is increasingly on plants that are not only visually appealing but also perform efficiently throughout the entire supply chain.

Sustainability also remains a key theme in plant breeding. Notably, this development is no longer relevant only to growers and producers. Consumers are becoming increasingly aware of where products come from and how they are developed and produced. As a result, a new generation of plants is emerging—one that is valued not only for its color, flowering performance, and appearance, but also for the sustainable qualities underlying its development.

The question is gradually shifting from “How beautiful is this plant?” to “How sustainably has this plant been developed and produced?” This trend demonstrates that breeding innovations make the greatest impact when they are translated into benefits that consumers can easily understand and appreciate.

Another noticeable trend? Mixed plant combinations are more popular than ever. Breeders and concept developers are creatively combining height, depth, texture, and color. Especially in hanging baskets, but increasingly in balcony containers as well, we are seeing complete combinations that function as ready-made miniature gardens. This allows consumers to enjoy a lush, colorful product without having to create combinations themselves.

FlowerTrials also attracted a large number of international visitors. Plant Collect organized a bus tour for customers, visiting various FlowerTrials locations and nurseries, enabling participants to efficiently visit multiple companies during their stay.
